Our Family

A passion for pressing fruit, a farmhouse passed through generations, a family growing up under the trees. With an ancestry of cyder-makers to our name, juicing apples run in the Healey family’s blood…

Healey’s is special. It’s a family-run company, with strong family values. When you put your name on something, it’s got to be good. It’s great to see the people that work with us sharing our passion, and genuinely wanting to make the best products they can.

I’ve been involved in the business for the last 20 years. I love the variety, the flexibility, the speed of change and ability to create something that can then be enjoyed by thousands of people.

Being a small business, we all muck in where needed. Pride goes into everything we do, from laying 300 tonnes of cobbles in the museum by hand, to hand-picking apples or maturing cyder in carefully selected barrels. Everyone at Healey’s puts pride, craftsmanship and hard graft into making the business what it is.

What’s your favourite Healey’s memory?

Co-founding Sam’s and my first business; selling apples to tourists to feed to the animals.

I remember being on the farm at five years old selling apples to feed the goats. Family heritage is very important. We’ve been making cyder here at Penhallow for 26 years and the Healey name goes back generations in Cornwall.

My day involves anything and everything. From pruning the orchards, or making new blends, to looking after the animals or designing the new production facilities.

We take pride in our products and in our customers who visit us at the farm and who taste our products throughout the Southwest. There is nothing nicer in the summer than going down to the local pub and seeing Rattler on every table.

What’s your favourite place to enjoy a Healey’s Cyder?

On the beach in the summer with the sun just about to disappear below the horizon.

As the newest member of the Healey family, preserving its time-honoured heritage is very important to me. I am excited to be part of the new adventures that will become Healey’s future. I’ve been working in my current role for 18 months but before that I was involved in promotions for Rattler – getting out there and seeing people enjoy the product was really fulfilling.

Healey’s has a natural beauty about it. It is the perfect blend of old, new and unusual; bringing traditional cyder-making methods to modern drinks, and a twist of modern innovation to traditional drinks.

Why is Cornwall special?

Working here is not so much a job as it is a way of life. In the evening after work, I love walking the dog with Sam on Perranporth beach, sitting with a Berry Rattler and looking at the sky, the sun, the sea and the surf. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but here.

I’ve been part of Healey’s since the beginning and am so proud of helping to build the business to its present state and seeing the children carry it forward. As company secretary I’ve been able to step back from the daily running of Healey’s but still make sure everything is ticking over. The farm is at the heart of what we do and is essential for our continuous improvement and development. Individual efforts really make a visible difference at Healey’s and it’s so great to see so many people all committed to making it the best it can be.

What’s your favourite memory from working here?

Watching our shire horse give birth and the foal taking its first steps

We enjoy seeing people happy, and for me it’s the family that really brings a smile to my face. From the moment we first began making cyder in our Twin Screw press, to today, when I can watch, listen and advise the team, the family’s hard work makes everything that comes out of Healey’s truly special. I’m proud of what we’ve achieved and the memories that we’ve shared.

Where’s the perfect place to enjoy a Healey’s tipple?

Anywhere, as long as you’re surrounded by friends and family.
